I got an appointment with the Orthopeadic surgeon after my GP wrote to him after my last visit on April 20th. I think its May the 27th or something, so another long wait. Also need to go see the GP again next week to get another sick note extention as it runs out on the 11th of this month. That'll be 4 months and counting.
Im guessing the surgeon's 3 months back to work schedule was a little optimistic! Looking more like 6 months now, but Ill see how I am in June. Could really do with earning some money again. There are things I want to buy!!

Been a long time
Well my last post was in February, so its been a while since I last updated.
I would have loved to have said I'd past the 3 months post op and feel great, but sadly its not the case.
3 months post op was April 10th. On April 8th I had a massive coughing fit due to a horrible cold Ive picked up and managed to injure myself pretty badly. Something popped in my back and I collapsed into a heap on the floor.
Previous to this, I had a meeting with the consultant surgeon on March 2nd, just a general check up. He seemed to think everything was going on track and said I should be able to start back at work on light duty on the 3 month date, Monday April 11th.
I was all ready to get back to it, when I got this cold/flu thing and now Im back to square one. I can barely walk again, I cant move once Im lying down in bed and I collapse everytime I cough or sneeze.
I made an apointment to see my GP, but there wasnt a space until May 3rd!! Thats over 3 weeks. I took the next available apointment with another GP which was today, April 20th. Only 2 weeks!
So yet another different GP, and having to explain everything again. He was very good though. Examined me and said its unlikely Ive caused any serious damage to the fusion, its more likely Ive torn some sutures inside or just pulled and inflamed the muscles around the verebrae. He is writing to my consultant anyway to try and get me an apointment for an Xray or MRI just in case. I wasnt due for an Xray until July.
So Ive been given some antibiotics to try and kill the coughing and some diclofenac to try reduce any inflamation. Plus signed off work for another month. The boss wont be happy. Im not really very happy either.
Stuck at home on my own all day, everyday. I was starting to get out and about a bit the last few weeks, but now I can barely get off the sofa. So I face another month on my own sat inside.
People are getting fed up, Im getting fed up. Starting to feel like a burdon on everyone, and feel utterly useless.
This is the sort of time a big lottery win would really help, thats if we could afford to play the lottery of course.
Anyhopw, thats enough for today, starting to bring myself down again, yet alone anyone reading this. I'll update somepoint when there is any change, good or bad.

Practice nurse update
Went to the Practice nurse yesterday for a checkup on the wound, All fine. Its healing well and no infection. The were no stitches to remove, so its all good.
Its still very painfull, but thats normal, although the nurse thinks Ive been over doing it, as there is some swelling which indicates Ive been to active!
SAtruggled to get a sick note for the next few weeks as the receptionist was the typical "I know more than you" type person and said I'd need to book an apointment with my GP to make sure Im "ill" enough for a sick note. Silly bint wouldnt listen that Ive just had a 5 hour major spinal surgery.
I told her to get my GP to ring me that afternoon, which he did, and he's given me a note for 8 weeks without issue.
I dont know why receptionists think they know it all. They dont, get on with your bloody job and stop trying to make my life difficult!!

10 days post op
Its been 10 days since the morning of the surgery, and 6 days since coming home.
Im still very very sore, the pain is mainly from the actual cuts, the associated bruises and muscle damage. \its very uncomfortable and getting to sleep is hard work.Also trying to find a comfortable sitting position is a nightmare.
Im pretty mobile around the house, I can climb the stairs ok, but I need help getting into the shower, as its over the bath and has a high side. Its pretty darn boring being stuck inside all day. Im running out of things to do!
Ill be so glad after about 4 weeks when I can go out for short gentle walks, and maybe even drive again, just to get out of the house.
As of yet, the pain from the surgery is overriding and potential benefit, so I cant even say if the surgery has been succesful. I imangine it will be a months or so until I can start thinking about that.
The scar isnt too bad, bigger than I thought, but is healing well.
Should be having the stitches taken out next week sometime at my Doctors, Im not sure if that will alleviate some discomfort, or make it worse??

I'm home!!
At last!! I'm home. I was discharged at about 9 am and my wife picked me up at about 10. So glad to be home, although it's quite hard work getting around. I wasn't too bad this morning but I think I may have overdone it and now I'm in a lot of pain everytime I move. My back actually isn't too bad, it's my left leg and hip that's causing the pain. I've also got some numbness in my left foot, but that should clear soon. I'm exhausted, it's been a long day and I'm going to try get to sleep now!

Had enough now
That's it I'm done. I'm really ready to go home now. I thought I was going to going today as the Physio said I did excellently on my first official walk up and down the stairs and as far as they were concerned I'm ready to go. If it wasn't for the substandard nursing I may have done so, it wasnt until gone 4 that I'd even had my catheter and blood drains taken out which were supposed to be done yesterday. So now it looks like I'm here another night unable to sleep due to all the noise and commotion that happens throughout the night.
If I'm not let out tomorrow I may just attempt a jump from the window. It's only 3 floors up, I'm sure it'd be fine.

Day 3 post op
Yesterday was pretty dull, although the physios cane in and got me sat and stood up. Still not allowed to walk because I've still got 2 blood drains in one of them should be coming out today. Had some X-rays yesterday too which I've been told are ok. I've had my epidural removed and my second drip thing fell out last night so now in on oral pain killers only. Not much else to report. Im hot, sweaty and can't wait to go home!

Post op day 1
Well today is my first post op day.I didnt sleep
a wink last night due to some very heavy snorers in the ward and the mad polish nurse taking my blood pressure every half hour. Finally got some food after 30 hours without eating a thing in the form of two sliced of burnt toast. Still better than nothing. My morpine drip also ran out and despite me ringing the bell for a nurse to come
immediately, it took over 30 minutes before one actually turned up, and she was only food nurse. It took a further 2 hours before I actually got some painkillers.
I also had a sponge bath and the sheets changed on the bed, the only issue being I'm unable to get out of bed, so I was still in it as they changed the sheets, rolling me from on side to

Thank god I've had my morphine dry refilled along with a paracetomol drip and a dicofenac tablet which is helping to ease the pain now.
Just had lunch, sausages, mash and bran. Quite comical as I can't sit up , so trying to eat it lying down!

Op day
I'm currently in the ward unable to move. I had my op at about 9am and it lasted until about 3pm. I'm in a lot if pain but have morphine on tap which takes the edge off. The ward isn't too bad, about 4 other people in here at the moment. My wife came in earlier and brought me some stuff like juice and a book but I'm just too tired to read at the moment. I cant feel any pain where the bone graft was taken on my left hand side hip, but I can feel the main incision. I've got a catheter in and a saline drip as well as well as the morphine. I've also got some funky airbags on my legs which blow up tight to push the blood around. I'm going to be in bed all day tomorrow and hopefully will be able to get out of bed on m

The last night
It's the last night before the op. My bag is packed and everything that needed doing is done. All that's left is to have a shower and get to bed early. Need to be at the hospital by 7.15am so I'm going to have to get up at about 5.30 or so. Waay to early on the best of days!
I don't know what the phone/Internet status is in hospital so not sure when I'll be able to post again, so until whenever...

3 days
Only 3 days left until the big day. Had my last day at work today, which feels a bit weird.
Been a pretty bad day pain wise, one of the worst for a while.
A bit aprehensive about the upcoming operation and recovery, I looked on youtube and found a woman who had the same surgery as Im having and posted loads of videos of before and after. She actually gave me more info than the nurses and surgeon have! Her videos have certainly given me a bit more confidence in the whole thing, and made what was a pretty crappy day a bit better

Oops, been a while since an update.
Well Ive had the Pre-op assesment, and everything is ok as far as Im aware. I now have the date for surgery, which is January 10th.
I have to be in Hospital at 7.15 in the morning, so that'll be a fun day, considering I need a shower, get everyhting ready and then get to the hospital. Going to be a very early start. The hospital stay should be about 5 days, all being well. 5 Days Im really not looking forward to!. I hate being stuck in places with people I dont know. I'll be glad to get home!
Ill probably post again before the date, and then as soon afterwards as I can. Im going to get some pictures of the before and after too!

Official
Just recieved a copy of the letter sent to my GP and pain clinic practictioner. Not sure if I was supposed to, but got one anyway!
It just explains that Ive chosen to the have the op, A lumbar spine fusion of L5-S1 with a pedicle screw rod fixation and bone grafting. Got a ring to it hasnt it! :-D Thats in addition to the L5/S1 discectomy of course!
It then goes on to detail all the things that might go wrong, a jolly old list involving wound infection through to loss of bladder control and paralysis. Bad times.
Still no word of the actual date, I guess they will tell me after the Pre op assesment thingy on the 13th...

Pre op assesment
Just had a letter through for my pre operation assesment. A bit short notice! The apointment was set up for Thursday 2nd December at 9.30. 2 days time!
Ive had to ring up and rebook it, as I cant get the time off work that quick. Ive rebooked it for Monday 13th Dec at 2.00.
They need blood samples and pressure, possibly another Xray or MRI and a urine sample. Should be a boring few hours again.
Ive just cancelled my 4 week long accupuncture session bookings too. They were booked in October and were due to start on the 22nd December right over Xmas until January. Its not at my local hospital, but a 20 minute journey away, and my first and last experience with accupuncture wasnt very good. I cant be doing with the hassle right over Xmas, as I have things to do, people to see....
On a lighter note, we got our first snow today!! Yay. Still went to work and the main roads were fine, but the smaller side roads were very icy. Its currently just above freezing, so its starting to melt. Tonight will dip below again though, so it will be an ice rink out tomorrow.
Just need to be carefull I dont slip and fall ass over tit. That wouldnt be good!

Welcome and history
Welcome to my blog about my forthcoming back surgey. This has been a very long road, and finally the date is almost set.
Looks like my back surgery is going ahead... In Jaunuary :eek:
I wasnt expecting it to be that soon, in fact the surgeon said I could have it in December, but I didnt fancy Xmas in bed.
Im having a spinal fusion and discectomy in the L4/5 to S1. They are chopping a bit of my pelvis off to stick in the hole in the spine and then hold it in place with a metal cage.
5 Days in hospital and at least 3 months off work. Going to be very hard, as I will only be getting £60 odd a week statutory sick pay, and I have a £650 a month mortgage to pay plus all the other bills on top. No more camera gear buying for me for a while.. :'(
Kind of glad its finally being sorted, but kinda scared at the prospect of pretty big surgery and the financial side.
I'll be updating this blog with stuff throughout the process, but below is a brief history up to this point.
I started having back problems from a young age. I believe it to be from school, carrying heavy bags around all the time. As I grew older it progressed and got worse and worse, until in August 2009, whilst out walking the dog in the Forest of Dean, my legs just gave way and a huge burst of agonising pain shot down my legs and all around my lumbar region. Ive never felt pain like it, and was seriously worried. With the aid of a walking stick found in the woods and my wife supporting me, I just about managed to get back to the car and drive home. Once home I sat on the sofa and a few minutes later attempted to get up and just couldnt move. My wife was in the garden, and I tried calling for her but she couldnt hear. I was stuck on the sofa, locked in that position and there was nothing I could do. A short while later, she same back in and I was sat there sobbing. She asked what was wrong, and of course I told her. She manged to pull me up and as she let go, I just fell to the floor. My legs and back couldnt support me, and again the pain was incredible.
Thankfully, I already had a doctors apointment booked for the next day,as during the previous week my back had been getting worse.
My wife took me down there and I managed to hobble into the surgery. NowIm the type of person who never visits the doctor. Ive been twice in 24 years, so I dont ask for much. However this particular Doctor, whilst simpathetic, just wasnt very helpfull. Her advice was take a week off work and take some pain killers. If I was still like it in a week, come back.
Well I did that and after a week it was not much better. I didnt book another doctor apointment straightaway, instead I went to see a highly reccomended Osteopath. He did some work on me that week, but it didnt have much of an effect. He reccomended I get an Xray so he and the Doctors could get a better view. By this time I could just about walk again unaided, but couldnt bend over at all, and was still in vast amounts of pain so I booked another apointment to see the doctor and went back the next week. Strangly it wasnt the same Doctor, but a male Doctor with the same surname as the pervious one. He also was less than helpfull. When I mentioned the Osteopath had asked for an Xray, he looked at me like I called his Mother something obscene. He didnt seem to like being told what to do by an Osteopath. He pretty much berrated me for seeing one and scribbled down the Xray dept in the Hospital's phone number and sent me on my way.
The story continues with another year and a bit of going backwards and fowards to the hospital and doctors. Ive been prescibed pretty much every drug under the sun, and seen every specialist in the hopsital. Ive had physio, accupuncture, drugs galore...
Only now, at the end of November 2010 am I finally gettting something done about it. Although now I have most of my movement back, I am still in pain 24/7 and have some really bad days where I can barely move.
In September I had some Facet joint injections to try and reduce the inflamation, but it wasnt succesfull and after another consulatation 3 months later, the pain clinic wanted me to undergo a futher 12 weeks of Physio. I said I wasnt really happy about this, and felt we had exhausted this line of treatment. I requested to be refered to the Orthapeadic surgeon, and 4 months on, this is where I have just arrived home from.
Its been an expensive, time consuming and stressful experience, spanning well over a year. The NHS dont seem very phased at my pain and have made no real effort until now. Each appointment was usualy 3 months apart, and that incuded getting the results from the MRI scan I had last January. I have not been very impressed with the service, and even less so when a friend of mine with the same problem went to thier GP in August this year and is booked in for the surgery on the 8th Dec. Its taken her less than 2 months to get where I have in 1 1/2 years. She isnt private either, she just took a different route than me, her GP refered her straight to the MUSCAT service and they fastracked her through, whilst I was sent to the Pain clinic, and they have lived up to thier name buy inflicting me with 1 1/2's years of pain!
Thankfully now things seem to progressing, and I will keep this updated every step of the way!

I have not been very impressed with the service, and even less so when a friend of mine with the same problem went to thier GP in August this year and is booked in for the surgery on the 8th Dec. Its taken her less than 2 months to get where I have in 1 1/2 years. She isnt private either, she just took a different route than me, her GP refered her straight to the MUSCAT service and they fastracked her through, whilst I was sent to the Pain clinic, and they have lived up to thier name buy inflicting me with 1 1/2's years of pain!
Thankfully now things seem to progressing, and I will keep this updated every step of the way!
